Social Media & Community For The Win

It has been a little over a week since Christmas has come and gone.  Just a memory now because everyone is onto the new exercise routines, or the best diets to lose weight.  Joining a gym and paying that gym membership (mine usually ends up being a donation) to really get yourself on track.  However I’m still in awe over something that happened at Christmas time.

I had recently put a few baby toys up for grabs on Facebook, for free to whoever may want them.  The first item went really quickly, however I had more from the many items given to me from blogging this year.  I had a few other moms reach out asking about the toys that had already gone to other homes.  One mom however, really stuck out to me.  A single mom, going through a difficult personal time as well as not in the best of health.

She had four children, ranging in ages of 9 months to 9 years.  I could tell she could really use some help, but at this point Christmas was about 5 days away.  I knew I was incapable of helping all by myself.  So what did I do?  I asked for help on Facebook.

Within minutes I had 5, 6, 8, 10 people that wanted to know how they could help.  Then 12, 15, 20.  It was a crazy outpouring of people wanting to help.  It was the very meaning of Christmas.  I was so thrilled and emotional at the same time.  I couldn’t wait to let her know we were going to help her and her children.

So with the help of my many Santa’s helpers we collected 7 BIG trash bags full of toys and clothes.  There was also 10-12 beautifully wrapped presents for the kids.  We had 3 or 4 gifts for mom.  There were bags with food in it.  A turkey and all the sides for Christmas dinner.  Then there were the gift cards.  Many gift cards, to stores like Stop & Shop and Walmart.  Plus more gift cards for other stores, fun places to take the kids and a few fast food restaurants.  All together adding up to about $350-400.00 worth.

Aaaa—MAZ—ING!

My family and I delivered them to her just two days before Christmas.  She was overwhelmed but unfortunately wasn’t really able to enjoy the moment due to her health.  She was later admitted into the hospital for a few days, missing Christmas, however her mother and father took care of her children and made sure Christmas morning was great with all of the amazing items given.

I am so proud and amazed by the support of my community!  They didn’t just offer to help, they jumped at the opportunity in droves! Also, many times social media gets a bad wrap, however in this case, I would not have been able to pull this off without it.  I had such a grateful, happy heart presenting her with these amazing gifts.  I also included my little guys in the process, to start having them understand the meaning of giving.download

She reached out a few days after Christmas (after getting back home from the hospital) saying she couldn’t believe someone, a stranger, would ever do something this amazing for her.  She even asked why I wanted to do this for her.  I told her, my mom was a single mom for many years.  She probably needed (and received) help every now and then to make sure I had everything I could ever need.  It was just a small way I could give back.    She called me her angel in disguise.  To which I responded, I am far from an angel but I do have some amazing friends willing to help in my corner.  For which, I am blessed and will always be grateful!

Let’s remember all year to be kind, have an open heart, help others even in the smallest ways.  A little gesture can really go a long way and might helps in more ways than you’ll ever know.

So to all of my friends and community…
